Quality Control in a Flex PCB Supplier

In order to ensure quality, you need to make sure that your flex pcb supplier has the right equipment and follows strict PCB manufacturing procedures. This includes visual inspection, component matching and solderability testing. It also involves following IPC rules for flex circuit design and assembly.

Unlike rigid PCBs, which are made of FR4, a flexible printed circuit board is made from a flexible material such as polyimide (Kapton) with one to multiple layers of copper. During the manufacturing process, these materials are treated with annealing to make them more flexible and less brittle. This treatment reduces noise and improves signal timing and is an important step in ensuring the longevity of the product.

The insulating layer in a flex PCB is thin, so it can bend much more than a rigid board without cracking. Consequently, the conductor traces need to be thinner than in rigid boards, and they must have a much greater surface area-to-volume ratio. This is the only way to ensure that the traces can pass the required current with minimal resistance and distortion. The thickness of the conductive layer is usually controlled by the amount of copper needed in each section of the etch pattern.

Another thing to consider is the type of plating used for a flex circuit. There are two options: panel plating and pad-only plating, known as button plating. The former is more expensive because it requires more copper and more steps to plate it, but it can provide better results in complicated etch patterns. In addition, button plating allows the manufacturer to more easily manage the copper thickness between traces and pads.

How to Ensure Quality Control in a Flex PCB Supplier

Other important factors include the etching method and the type of copper used. Several etching processes are available, including plasma, chemical etch and dry etch. A good flex PCB designer will know which one is best for their specific design.

The other important factor to look for is the manufacturer’s track record of providing consistent, high-quality products. This record should be available on the company’s website and should contain customer reviews and ratings. In addition, the manufacturer should be certified by a reputable organization such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA).

A good flex pcb supplier will have a proven track record of producing high-quality products at a reasonable price. This is especially important for companies with tight budgets. If the supplier has a low reputation, they may not be able to meet your requirements or even sell their products at all.

A good pcb flex design should have rounded corners to prevent tearing in areas expected/designed to be bended. Moreover, it should avoid solid polygons in flex areas as they will make the PCB stiffer and less flexible. Instead, hatched polygons should be used as these are easier to bend and will provide better bending performance than square corners.
