Should you need to tow a vessel to a European port, it is important to make sure that the boat is registered in your home country. In some cases, this might simplify dealings with local harbour and other authorities. In addition, it is a good idea to register your craft if you plan to spend the night in a Spanish marina or harbour. This usually entails payment of the lighthouse/sea mark charge (tasa de servicio de senalizacion maritima) and a certificate that you are competent to navigate comparable waters in your own country.
During the Brexit transition period you can still take your charter a boat into the EU without paying import duty and VAT by declaring it for temporary admission at a customs border point. This involves presenting an inventory of the goods you are temporarily importing (as applicable, this includes making an oral declaration and/or completing Annex 71-01 of the UCC Commission delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/2446) and undertaking to re-export it at the end of its temporary admission. This undertaking can be a written declaration or, in case of RoRo ports or cruise ships, an act of conduct, such as driving the boat off the ferry.
